I know it has been a while since my last post (we’ve been too busy going on trips and planning the next trip…), BUT I promise this post will not let you down.

When I went back to Taiwan in March, I happened to visit a newly opened restaurant in Taipei, recommended by my ex-colleague. It can be easily accessed by metro as it is located conveniently in the vibrant Da-an district in Taipei city. Serving moderately-priced Spanish tapas, VIVO had instantly sparked my curiosity. (It is not easy to find restaurants that serve European cuisine in Taiwan, with the exception of Italian food)

The interior is very modern and futuristic, with the white decor, big mirrors, transparent chairs and blue fluorescent light. It almost felt like I was in a disco club. In fact, the art pieces displayed in the restaurant are all carefully selected by the owner. Even the transparent dining chairs are from Kartell’s Ghost Collection.

More dining space are available in the basement. It is a bit more spacious down there and you continue to see modern elements in their interior decoration and selection of furniture. Private rooms are also available to accommodate large groups of people.

Wine list and menu

VIVO has a very short and simple wine list. It offers 5 different red and white wines that are best paired with their dishes. If you are not a wine connoisseur, that’s fine. On the wine list, it has an “short bio” of each wine- its flavor and taste and the kind of dishes it goes best with. The pricing for the wines is the same- NT$169 per glass or NT$799 per bottle (equivalent to approx. CDN$6 per glass or CDN$28 per bottle).

We ordered a bottle of sparkling wine to share. VIVO III Malvasia dell’emilia SECCA has sweet, fruity flavor and smooth taste. It goes well with vegetable and white meat dishes.

We started with some tomato and garlic bread and a cold dish. The broccoli and chicken salad was light and certainly helped bring up my appetite.

We also ordered some hot tapas, including calamari, chorizo tortilla, grilled pork with potato and seafood paella. The paella serves 2, but was actually quite filling for the four of us given that we had also ordered other dishes. The calamari was so so, but all other hot tapas were delicious.

Bomba de chocolate (NT$139)

Of course, we never ended a meal without desserts. We had brownies with ice cream, creme brulee, and red wine poached pear. It was my first time having red wine poached pear. It tasted interesting. My favorite dessert among them all was the brownie (nothing can compete with chocolate!)

In total, we spent about NT$2799 (CDN$93) for the meal to enjoy delicious Spanish food at affordable price!

In general, it was quite an unique dining experience. I loved the atmosphere. The food was better than what I expected. Definitely a go-to place if you are planning for a gathering or reunion!
