If you asked me what’s my favorite brunch spot in Calgary, I would yell out “Monki” without hesitation. We had been to this chic restaurant twice already and it did not disappoint us. Let’s check out what we ordered and hopefully you will get a chance to try these heavenly food yourself!

If you ever gonna visit Monki, take my advice to arrive there early. Anytime after 9am, you will be caught in a long line. Trust me, you do not want that. Especially in the winter. Its small intimate space couldn’t accommodate many people and late comers will most likely be asked to wait in the cold.

The exposed brick wall added some warmth and rough vintage charm to the place. Since it had an open kitchen, it tended to get very smokey inside. Don’t be surprised if you find the odor lingers in your clothes.

We sat at the bar counter which allowed us to peek into the kitchen and see how the chef work their magic 🙂

There’s an array of hot sauce displayed in front of us as well. While waiting, I started pondering which I should try later…

My chorizo benedicts ($15) was wonderfully flavorful and savory. The eggs were perfectly done, nestled in light, buttery-smooth prosecco hollandaise. They paired nicely with the crispy biscuits. I am not a fan of goat cheese and I thought the spiciness of the chorizo would be strong enough to cover up the sour smell, but nope. That’s the only bummer. Otherwise, I really liked the dish. The well-seasoned chunky hash browns and fruit cup were a nice complement!

Kev’s brisket & monki sausage hash with fried eggs and hollandaise ($16) was equally impressive! Slow, long cooking resulted in beautifully moist and tender meat. The contrasting flavors of the yolky fried eggs and the heavy saucy brisket enhanced each other. Not to mention how crispy and soft the potato hash was. Excellent!

If you want something not as heavy and overwhelming, give the frittata a try! The sun-dried cherry tomatoes, spicy Italian sausage& bocconcini ($15) was light and fluffy, with a nice touch of saltiness from the spicy Italian sausage and mild tangy taste from the tomatoes.

Sweet breakfast? Go for it! The banana & frangelico cream cheese stuffed french toast, topped with nutella & condensed milk ($15) might appear daunting, but it was so delicious and well-balanced that you would be in ecstasy. The cream cheese balanced out the nutella and condensed milk, ensuring that the sweetness wasn’t overpowering.
