It’s been a long time, my friends! I’m finally back!!! 2 weeks vacation seemed like ages, especially when our schedule was fully packed with wedding planning.
For those of you who are curious about what we saw, bought and ate, stay tuned for my upcoming travel posts!
First thing we couldn’t wait to try as soon as we stepped out of the airport was WAFFLES!! We were exhilarated when we found out a new waffle shop just opened its door to waffle-crazing citizens on 17th Ave. Now we don’t have to dreaming about Nero Belgian Waffle Bar day and night 😛
The open-concept room was bright and airy. The buttery waffle-smell made it especially welcoming. At the counter, you could the waffles being made in front of your eyes. The shelves displayed the ingredients used to create the waffles!
If you came with a bigger group of friends, you could opt to sit at communal tall table where you admire waffle irons dangling from the ceiling and a patterned wall.
They made one and only one thing here – waffles. That made ordering super easy eh? You can enjoy waffles that come with a preset combination of ingredients or build your own! Since it was our first visit, we decided to try their creation 🙂
I ordered the fruit waffle ($9) that consisted of fresh strawberries, whipped cream, berry syrup drizzle and strawberry cream. Despite all the cream, it tasted light and wonderfully refreshing. The buttermilk waffle had a crisp ulterior and pillowy interior. Finally, we had some decent waffles in Calgary. Hooooray!!
Kev was being greedy and ordered 2 Rachel’s cinnamon bun waffle ($13). The waffles were topped with ingredients you would expect from a typical cinnamon bun – cinnamon syrup, cream cheese frosting and pecans. Unlike the fruit waffle, this one was heavy, rich and sweet (but not sickening sweet). Perfect to satisfy a sweet tooth without the guilt 🙂 Though ordering 2 waffles was a bit too much even for a guy.
We hadn’t found any delicious waffles in Calgary before then and Buttermilk sure hit the spot. (Of course, Nero is still my no. 1 and nothing is comparable to it) We would definitely come back for more 🙂 On the plus side, it is open from 9am t0 10pm. You can have waffles for breakfast, lunch or supper!
We came back a month later and joyfully discovered that Buttermilk started serving savory waffles! I had the H.A.M. ($10), topped with asiago, grana padano, slices of ham, caramelized onion and chives. The marriage of salty, sweet and fluffy can’t be beat!
