We passed by Cliver Burger on the 17th Ave many times and always wondered how good its burger is. As we entered the restaurant, I was surprised that this place is actually very spacious. The sitting area extends all the way towards the back.
Clive emphasizes on using natural ingredients and being environmentally responsible by serving its burgers with 100% antibiotic and hormone-free Alberta beef and using 100% compostable packaging. Its menu is quite simple, with a few options including burgers, hot dogs, french fries, wine/beer, custard shakes, and soda pop. You can customize your burger/hot dog by picking the toppings you like. We quickly came to decide what to order, placed our order at the counter, and waited for our food. We were given a buzzer so that we would know when our food is ready.
What really caught my attention was its modern, cartoony design. The environment was bright and clean which made it a pleasant place to enjoy our meal.
Kev ordered the double burger with cheddar cheese ($10) and chose clive sauce, ketchup, mustard, pickle, lettuce, tomato, onion and jalapeno as toppings. As usual, I wanted something lighter so I ordered the hamburger ($6) with clive sauce, pickle lettuce, tomato, onion and jalapeno for toppings. The burgers were compactly packed which made them look tiny, but actually they were quite filling. The beef patties were juicy and tasty. Other toppings like lettuce, tomato, onions were fresh. However, nothing about the burgers made it especially outstanding.
We also ordered the large french fries ($4), which came with tomato sauce and clive (spicy mayo) sauce. The large fries were too much for the two of us. I was very disappointed with the french fries, which were very very dry and obviously not freshly made. The clive sauce wasn’t that special either. Personally, I prefer the spicy chipotle mayo sauce from A&W.
Overall, I think Clive Burger is a bit overpriced. I wish it has more options besides beef burgers, e.g., chicken, fish, or veggie burgers. It would also be nice if it offers burger combos that come with fries and drinks.
My review: My experience at Clive Burger is like Cold Stone’s Create Your Own Creation. It is somewhere that allows you to customize your burger with your choice of toppings.
