Our friend tried to bring us to here once on a weekend, but found out that it was at least a 40-min wait when we arrived. Not quite in the mood to wait that long, we gave up and went to another place to eat instead. One day, Kev had a day off on a weekday so we decided to take a trip to bridgeland and give this place another try. Lucky us- no wait at 11 am!
The cute, little diner has a simplistic, modern design with white and blue decor, yet provides a homey dining atmosphere. Browsing through its menu, it gave us the impression that it is a environmentally conscious and locally supportive business. They use locally produced, organic ingredients and recycle everything they can to minimize environmental footprint.
It has quite an extensive breakfast and lunch. You can order anything from bennies, cereal, pancake, salad, burger, grilled cheese to burritos! We asked the staff for recommendations and finally narrowed down to chipotle pulled pork hash ($16) and huevos rancheros ($14).
We weren’t impressed with the chipotle pulled pork hash. The slow roasted pork was served with sweet potatoes, bell peppers, mushrooms, sweet onions and two soft-poached eggs on top. It was drizzled with chipotle lime sauce and sprinkled with smoked paprika and fresh cilantro. All the flavor we tasted came from the pulled pork, which was tender and moist. However, other ingredients were rather bland. We were expecting it to be more smokey.
I didn’t regret ordering the huevos ranchero. The corn tostadas was crisp. Topped with beans, onions, peppers, black bean cilantro salsa, avocado, gouda and two sunny side eggs- giving this dish a bright, flavorful taste. It was also served with hash brown, sour cream, salsa on the side. We ended up devouring the whole plate!
Overall, we had a delightful brunch at Blue Star Diner. Their brunch is slightly pricey, given that the portion is not that big. My advice for first-timer is… don’t be too adventurous with what you order. If you know what is delicious there (by doing some research online or word of mouth), stick to it.
